Community Update – July 15th

Dear Neighbour,

It’s been wonderful to see so many of you out and about in our community over the past couple of weeks! Lots of cycling, running, walking; shopping local and taking out dinner; doing Tai Chi in the park or bringing a paddleboard down to Cherry Beach. It’s important to remain 2m apart, wash hands frequently, and continue to wear masks where needed, but our corner of Toronto is moving again and it is beautiful to see!

With that in mind, this week I am launching the Race Across Canada in partnership with the Isolation Run movement. This is a friendly virtual competition where I am challenging other MPs and their communities to work together to amass enough kilometres by walking, running, wheeling, kayaking, or cycling to cross all 8,030 km of our great country!

We will be having a special Facebook Live tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm with Peter Donato, founder of the Isolation Run and our key coordinator on the Race. Tune in tonight at 7 to learn more about this initiative: https://www.facebook.com/JulieDabrusinTorontoDanforth.

Federal Updates

On Monday we announced that the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) would be extended until December to help businesses ramp back up as the economy begins to reopen. More details on the extension will be available soon, but this announcement is due in no small part to feedback from our local business community and is further recognition that the federal government will need to continue to support small and local businesses for some time to come.

We also increased the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) to help families. The CCB has had an important impact on reducing child poverty across our country and this year’s indexed increase helps to continue this work.  The CCB is going up to $6,765 per child under age 6 (annually) and up to $5,708 per child age 6 through 17. You can learn more by visiting the CCB calculator online

Looking forward to seeing you out and about in our Race Across Canada!
