Members of the Federal Cabinet on November 29 2016 announced their decision to approve two major pipeline projects and to deny approval for one other.
I have heard many constituents express their concerns and strong feelings about decisions on pipelines and the impact of oil sands production on the environment.
I am reviewing the 157 conditions to which the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Expansion project must comply with before the pipeline can be twinned. While I am disappointed with the decision, I have read Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s statement on this announcement and will follow her plans for Alberta closely, including her plan to implement an emissions cap for the oil sands.
I was pleased to see the rejection of the Northern Gateway pipeline. By refusing approval for the Northern Gateway pipeline we are going to protect the pristine environment that makes up BC’s north coast. We are imposing a moratorium to stop crude oil tankers from traveling that coast, which will protect and preserve the Great Bear Rainforest for our children.
I support a move towards green technologies, and clean energies initiatives. I will continue to advocate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fulfill our climate change commitments. I know this is an important issue for members of our community and is one that I care about personally.
